The 63-year-old man Gborbu Wulomo, Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII, married a 12-year-old girl named Naa Okromo. A guest at the wedding said it was because of an old tradition that says the priest must marry a girl who has never had s*x before.

He also revealed that in Nungua, there are no girls who fit this rule and are older than nine years old. The priest chose the girl when she was only six years old. According to a Ghanaian news source called Pulse, the girl will now have another special ceremony for purification. The ceremony aims to make the girl ready for her duties as a wife to Gborbu Wulomo which includes having children.

The shrine where Gborbu Wulomo works in Nungua, Greater Accra region defended the marriage. They said the girl is still in school and doesn’t live with Gborbu Wulomo. They started the traditional marriage to prevent other men from pursuing her.

They also mentioned that when she grows older, they will have another ceremony to complete the marriage. Star FM in Ghana revealed that the ceremony was supposedly needed “to make sure no man harms her sexually.”

A spokesperson for the temple, Nii Bortey Kofi Frankwa II, explained that the marriage has historical and spiritual importance. They explained, “Naa Yomo Ayemuade is a woman who lived over 300 years ago and has come back to make sure certain important rituals for one of the deities are performed.”

This perspective suggests a cultural belief in protecting the girl’s future interests. The shrine intends to conduct the final marriage rites when she becomes of age, indicating a separation until then. However, the practice raises ethical questions regarding the consent and rights of the young bride, highlighting the complexity of balancing cultural traditions with contemporary values and human rights concerns.
