Alongside Sandhu, two other new members, Narain Dass Gupta and Swati Maliwal, joined the Rajya Sabha as MPs on Wednesday.
President nominates Satnam Singh Sandhu as a new Rajya Sabha member
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a circular stating the following:
In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-clause (a) of clause (1) of Article 80 of the Constitution of India, read with clause (3) of that Article, the President is pleased to nominate Shri Satnam Singh Sandhu to the Council of States to fill the vacancy caused due to the retirement of one of the nominated members,โ
Following the circular, Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar also welcomed Sandhu through a statement. In the statement, he added that Sandhuโs rich work in community service and his passion for education, innovation, and learning will all serve as sources of strength for the Rajya Sabha. He ended the statement by wishing Sandhu the very best for his tenure.
Sandhu replied with the statement:

Prime Minister congratulates Satnam Singh Sandhu
Following the announcement about the nomination, Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a statement congratulating Sandhu. He stated:
I am delighted that Rashtrapati Ji has nominated Shri Satnam Singh Sandhu Ji to the Rajya Sabha. Satnam Ji has distinguished himself as a noted educationist and social worker, who has been serving people at the grassroots in different ways. He has always worked extensively to further national integration and has also worked with the Indian diaspora.โ
He ended the speech by wishing him the very best for his parliamentary journey. Meanwhile, Sandhu thanked the Prime Minister and praised the Prime Minister for giving farmers like him the opportunity to voice the aspirations of people across the country.
Satnam Singh Sandhu bio
Satnam Singh Sandhu is the son of a farmer and arguably one of the country’s leading educationists. He was born in Rasoolpur, Ferozepur, Punjab, India. Sandhu had a tough childhood growing up, working as an agriculturist and struggling to get any proper education. However, he overcame all these hardships and became one of the leading educationists in India.
Notably, Sandhu played an instrumental role in establishing the Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC) at Landran in Mohali in 2001. He also went on to establish Chandigarh University back in 2012, where he currently works as chancellor. Aside from these works, Sandhu has been actively involved in large-scale community efforts for the improvement of health and wellness. He does this through his two NGOs, which are the Indian Minorities Foundation and the New India Development Foundation.
Satnam Singh Sandhu’s wife is Damandeep Kaur Sandhu with whom he has a son named Deep Inder who got married in 2022.
