The group stage lasts 11 days, and 24 countries can compete in the final tournament. The top two teams from each of the six groups advance, with the top four third-place finishers completing the final 16 teams.

As Walid Regragui’s team defeated Spain and Portugal to become the first African team to reach the last four, Morocco’s semifinal performance at the 2022 World Cup set a new record for African countries.

Senegal now holds the championship, and the Atlas Lions, who haven’t made it to the final since losing to Tunisia in 2004, will be looking to turn that into AFCON triumph.

Africa Cup of Nations schedule, date and time

After being moved from June–July 2021 in Cameroon to January 2021, AFCON 2022 was originally planned to take place in the height of summer due to heat and precipitation issues. In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the event was moved to January 2022. In the same vein, worries over player welfare resulting from playing in the middle of Africa’s summer caused AFCON 2023 to be moved to 2024. Although it will be played in 2024, it’s still called 2023 AFCON because of the sponsorship deals.

Mid-January to mid-February of 2024 will be the dates of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The final is set for February 11 after the knockout stages start on January 27.
