On Sunday, the fifth-round ties of the 2023 Norway Chess will be played where leader Fabiano Caruana will face-off against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and the defending champion Magnus Carlsen will play against Dutch star Anish Giri. In the other ties, Indian prodigy Gukesh is scheduled to clash against Nodirbek Abdusattorov, while Wesley So will entertain Alireza Firouzja.

2023 Norway Chess round 5 schedule, date, time, venue, & latest standings
By defeating Alireza Firouzja with black pieces in the classical game, Fabiano Caruana extended his lead at the top to four points. With this win, Caruana also climbed to the second position in the world rankings by overtaking Firouzja. At the 2023 Norway Chess, Caruana has won three of his four classical matches and hence, he is sitting comfortably at the top with 10.5/12 points.
However, all other fourth-round ties were decided through Armageddon as Hikaru Nakamura came out on top against Anish Giri to sit second with 6.5 points. Meanwhile, Abdusattorov lost his Armageddon match against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Wesley So emerged victorious against bottom-placed Aryan Tari. In the most exciting Armageddon match of Saturday, Magnus Carlsen survived Gukesh’s tricky play before emerging victorious in the Armageddon. Following these results from Saturday, Carlsen is sitting eighth with 4.5 points and Gukesh is sitting fourth with 5.5 points.
