Who is James Marape?
James Marape is a renowned Papua New Guinean politician and is currently serving as the Prime Minister of the country. He has been in the news because he touched PM Modi’s feet and asked for his blessings.
He was born on April 24, 1971, in Tari, Southern Highlands Province, Territory of Papua and New Guinea (now Hela Province, Papua New Guinea). He belongs to the Huli tribe and identifies himself as a Christian.
James Marape did his schooling at Minj Primary School and Kabiufa Adventist Secondary School. Later, he graduated from the University of Papua New Guinea with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Subsequently, he also pursued a master’s in environmental science.
He is married, and his wife’s name is Rachael Marape. They are the parents of six children. Marape is currently 52 years old.
His career
After doing multiple jobs related to managerial functions, James Marape started his political career in 2002 with the People’s Progress Party. Later, he joined the National Alliance Party in 2007 and the People’s National Congress from 2012 to 2019.
Over the course of his career, he has served as a representative of the Tari-Pori Open electorate in the highlands of Hela Province in Papua New Guinea’s National Assembly since July 2007. He served in the government as the Minister of Finance from 2008 to 2011 and the Minister of Education (2012–2019).
Under the banner of the Pangu Party, James Marape ran in the elections 2022 and gained the most seats of any party. Hence, he formed a government. His net worth is between $1-5 million.
