The Chief Mourner, also known as the Sangju, plays a crucial role in South Korean funeral customs. The oldest son or grandchild, or the one who was closest to the dead, is typically assigned the duty. Sangju is in charge of preparing the body, ensuring that the funeral wake follows Korean customs, and overseeing the entire process.

According to Korean tradition, the Sangju supposedly “let” their loved one die away. In exchange, they are given responsibility for all pre-burial, funeral, and memorial duties.

Pre-funeral ceremonies are now typically performed by professionals. Chief Mourner must still have played a significant role in it, though. Sangju’s duties also include welcoming visitors and seeing their needs.
