Four fights four wins

The first bout feature Nikhat against Rio Olympics bronze medallist Ingrit Valencia of Colombia in the 50kg semifinal. After an intense exchange out punches, the judges awarded Nikhat with the win by a unanimous 5-0 scoreline. Following the win, Nikhat will now go up against Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Tam in the final bout.

In the second fight, Nitu beat reigning Asian champion Alua Balkibekova of Kazakhstan, 5-2 in the 48kg category. The match was a rematch of last year’s World Championships quarterfinal. Nitu fell behind in the opening round, but persevered through the remaining two rounds of the bout. Here next fight is against Mongolia’s Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg in the final.

The third fight featured a clash between two highly decorated boxers, the Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina (75kg) and 2018 World Champion Li Qian of China. Lovlina beat her opponent with a 4-1 victory on points following a review.

The first two rounds ended with both fighters winning one each. Lovlina however, shifted gears in the third round and then secured the win with a good attacking display in the final round. Lovlina will now go up against two-time Commonwealth Games medallist Caitlin Parker of Australia in the final.

Meanwhile, the last fight featured three-time Asian medallist Saweety (81kg), who defeated Australia’s Emma-Sue Greentree 4-3 on points. The fight was a fierce contest, but Saweety’s experience eventually helped her triumph over her opponent. Saweety will now face China’s Wang Lina, the 2018 World Champion in the final match on Saturday.

Post-match interviews

Following their fights, the four boxers each shared their thoughts on their respective wins and upcoming fights:

Nikhat Zareen

Nikhat shared the following about the match:

Firstly, today’s was my fifth bout in this competition, everyday I’m improving. I’m very happy with the way I performed against such an experienced boxer.”

She also shared her experience of fighting in front of a home crowd, stating:

The feeling is surreal. The way they support me, it motivates me a lot when I’m the ring. When the round finishes and I come back to my corner, before sir (coach) tells me the score, I hear the crowd’s noise and I know I’m ahead, that’s one kind motivation of me.”

She shared her thoughts on the upcoming final

Nitu Ganghas

Following the win, Nitu shared:

My first three matches all end with RSCs, and today the semifinal was tough. I had lost to her last time in the world championship on split decision. Today, I just wanted to win, and I managed to do that. I knew she was tiring, she was falling in the second and third rounds, and she was making me fall too, it was a sign that she was tired.”

Lovlina Borgohain

Lovlina stated about the fight saying:

Today’s bout was a bit tough. I fought as per our plan and strategy. I was aggressive in the final round, the way my coaches told me to fight. My plan was to confuse the opponent. I was attacking but was counter-attacking the opponent.”

She also shared about her upcoming fight with Australia’s Caitlin Parker in the final.

Saweety, who won a close contest while fighting under pressure stated:

I had no pressure. I don’t believe that Australia are better than India. Pressure should be on the opponents. If you take pressure, you’ll not put up a good performance.”

She also shared her thoughts about all the four Indian boxers making it to the final.
