Manu Bhaker fell short in the qualification of the women’s 10 Air Rifle event as a pistol circuit malfunction wasted precious time for her at the Tokyo Olympics

After an extremely dismal outing on Saturday in the shooting event of the Tokyo Olympics, India stepped out on Sunday looking to overhaul their underachieving form. With the precarious Manu Bhaker in show on the day, India were envisaged to put in a massively improved performance.

Things for the 19 year old got underway to a solid start as she partook in the qualification round of the women’s 10m Air Rifle event. Steadfastly looking to make it into the final round of the event, Bhaker unfortunately faced a massive hurdle.

Bhaker’s pistol suffered a circuit malfunction in the second series, one which robbed her of five minutes of time. It not only left her shorthanded as she tried to make up for lost time but also ended up disrupting her rhythm as she finished 12th with 575 points, just 2 short of the 577 cut-off mark.

India’s Yashaswini Singh Deswal came in 13th with 574 points. Prior to her technical glitch, Bhaker had begun by shooting 98 to seal her place in the top 8 which was followed by 95, 94 and a 95.

Heena Sindhu Comes Out In Support Of Manu Bhaker

One 8 and three 9s in the sixth and final series saw France’s Celine Goberville take the eighth and last qualifying spot as Bhaker saw her dream in the event came to an unfortunate end. Her father, Ramkishan Bhaker who is a NHAI official said that the electronic trigger of Manu’s pistol had suffered a circuit malfunction.

Meanwhile, pistol shooter, Heena Sindhu took to Twitter to not only offer her support to Bhaker but also hit out at those lashing out at Manu. “She didn’t succumb to pressure she rose to it. “Giving a score of 575 in less than 34 mins is n achievement of her nerves,” Heena tweeted.

Deepak Singh Panwar meanwhile ended 33rd in the men’s 10m air rifle qualification while Deepak took 26th spot to see India’s horrid show in shooting stretch into Sunday as well.
