Tokyo Olympics Day 2 Live Mary Kom vs Miguel Hernandez: Mary Wins Opening Boxing Match To Enter Round Of 16

Mary Kom won her opening flyweight match as she defeated Miguel Hernandez to storm into the round of 16 at the Tokyo Olympics

After a dejecting Saturday at the Tokyo Olympics with Mirabai Chanu’s silver medal being the only silver lining, India stepped out looking to improve things on Sunday. However, Sunday morning continued to remain dreary for the country with dejecting results in shooting, table tennis and tennis.

In the midst of this barrage of dismaying news and massive setbacks, Mary Kom once again managed to offer some kind of solace to the country. Stepping out for her flyweight bout, the Indian boxer won her first round showdown to make it into the round of 16 at the Tokyo Olympics.

Tokyo Olympics Live Day 2 Mary Kom vs Miguel Garcia Round Of 32 Match

Taking on Dominican Republic’s Miguel Hernandez, Miguelina Hernandez Garcia in the 51kg round of 32 matchup, Mary won 4-1. The clash was finely balanced after the opening two rounds with the score standing level at 19-19.

However, from there on, Mary came alive as she battered Garcia to win the ensuing rounds and with it take the win on the night. Apart from judge 2 who gave Garcia 29 points, all the remaining four judges scored in favour of Mary Kom.

Mary’s left jab in the third round was the most riveting moment from her repertoire on the day as she made into the ensuing round.

India had on the opening day outshone New Zealand 3-2 with two goals from Harmanpreet Singh and Rupinder Pal Singh scoring once after New Zealand had taken the lead on the day.
