Shapovalov is down 1-0 to Albot in their previous meeting. At the 2020 Sofia Open, he defeated the Canadian in straight sets.

Prediction

Denis Shapovalov and Radu Albot are set to meet for the second time on tour level at the quarterfinals of the Korea Open 2022.

Shapovalov faced Jaume Munar in the second round following a first-round bye. The Canadian secured a serve break in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead, but was promptly broken in the next game. However, he was able to win the set by taking the final three games to seal the victory.

Shapovalov got off to a quick 3-1 lead in the second set, but Munar took the following several games to even the score at 3-3. The Canadian broke serve once more in the ensuing game to take the lead. Munar saved a few match points for a hold of service when he subsequently served to stay in the match at 5-3.

But the Spaniard simply postponed what would eventually happen. The following game was the final one, and Shapovalov won it 7-5, 6-4 to end the tournament. He has now advanced to the event quarterfinals for the first time since the Italian Open in May.

To face Steve Johnson in the second round, Radu Albot had to defeat Hiroki Moruya in the opening round. Beginning the tiebreak in a 3-0 down, the Moldovan was in an uncertain position. Though he lost the next seven points, he won the next seven to win the match 7-6 (3), 7-6 (3), and advance to his second quarterfinal of the year.

In his second-round matchup with Johnson, Albot was frequently under pressure, but he handled it well and prevailed. In order to defeat a server like Shapovalov, he will have to repeat his successful neutralisation of the American’s serve. The tournament’s rules are expected to be set by the Canadian.

With his unbeatable spirit during rallies and exceptional recovery abilities, Albot has the ability to provoke his opponent into making more mistakes. Shapovalov, though, put up a better performance in the first round and will therefore be the favourite to win in the quarterfinals as well.
