Prediction
Alize Cornet and Clara Tauson are set to meet for the very first time tomorrow at Cleveland Open 2022.
Iga Swiatek’s spectacular run on the circuit earlier this season was halted by Cornet, but Cornet’s overall form this year hasn’t been all that impressive.
Even though Dayana Yastremska was the favourite to win the match when they first met, the world number 37 had only won two of her previous five matches coming into this competition. This had more to do with how poorly Dayana Yastremska had conducted herself than anything else.
However, Cornet defeated Yastremska quickly, winning 6-2, 6-1 in a match that lasted just one hour and twelve minutes. She only encountered one break point the entire game, compared to Yastremska’s 13 break points and five breaks.
Cornet will be hoping to recreate a feat she last accomplished at the Australian Open in January, where she won back-to-back matches in a hard court competition and advanced to the quarterfinals.
Similar to Cornet, Tauson spent very little time on the court during her first-round victory over Harmony Tan in straight sets.
The Dane won 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and 17 minutes to set up this match with Cornet after failing to qualify for the Cincinnati Open the previous week.
On the other hand, Tauson faced a few break-points in the first set and was broken once, but by that stage, she had sped up to a 5-2 lead. She immediately broke again to win the set, and she later added a few more serve breaks in the second set to seal the triumph.
At the Melbourne Summer Set and Australian Open, where she won two straight matches before dropping the third, Tauson had her best performance of the year on hard courts. It is to be seen if she can repeat that successfully a third time.
