Prediction
In the 2022 Korea Open semifinal on Sunday, October 1, World Number 56 Yoshihito Nishioka will face off against surprise opponent and rated 222nd, Aleksandar Kovacevic.
Nishioka defeated No. 2 in the world Casper Ruud to advance to the semifinals, causing one of the biggest surprises of the competition. In less than two hours, Nishioka, who was 3/1 to achieve that kind of result, prevailed 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 to advance to his second semifinal of the year. He had already shocked a large group of competitors by making it to the Washington Open final.
Ruud gave up 10 aces, but Nishioka managed to save five of those break points and gain nine of his own while breaking the star player four times. It began with one in the first game of the first set and came to an end with one in the final game of the decider. With the kind of drive Nishioka has recently displayed, it wouldn’t be impossible for him to secure a second title-deciding spot for the season.
Kovacevic, an American, has never before been ranked among the top 200 players on the ATP tour, but regardless of what happens next, reaching the semifinals will help him achieve that goal.
Kovacevic needed three sets and one hour and forty-one minutes, but in the end, the American defeated McDonald to earn his first-ever semifinal spot in an ATP tournament. In three chances, Kovasevic broke his opponent three times while hitting 12 aces and won 91% of his first serve points. And even though he dropped his own serve once, there was no turning back for him in the decisive set, which saw him win 15 of the possible 15 first serve points while twice breaking his opponent.
Although Nishioka is the early favourite, it is likely that his unexpected American opponent will force a third set.
