Finally XFL is returning for 2023 to mark its third time tournament, know its new rules
The league has tried to established itself as a dominant presence in the spring football industry.
The first attempt of the league came in 2001 but it never caught on anyone’s attention. However, it’s 2020 edition was on track to fare much better but it was forced to shut down due to Covid-19 pandemic.
Now once again, the league is all set to return with its third edition to look for success. The organizers of the league is looking to do the same thing with a key pillar of innovation differentiation.
XFL 2023 news rules and format vs NFL meaning explained
Alike most spring leagues of the recent years, XFL is looking out not to challenge the NFL. Instead, it is looking for ways to differentiate it’s product and provide the fans with an affordable different approach than watching NFL.
If you’re wondering about the rules of XFL, let us tell you, the tournament has found ways to tweak the on-field product without causing major disturbances with viewers. Here’s all the details about the rule changes of XFL.
XFL overtime rules
In its overtime approach, the XFL is taking a page out of both college football as well as NHL’s books. Rather than playing full extra period, each team will be given 3 attempts at 2-points conversation from their opponent’s 5-yeard line.
Those team with the most conversation after the 3 attempts will be emerged as the winner. If the score remains tied after 3 attempts then the team will continue to alternate single possessions until a winner is decided.
The rule is designed to both shorten the game and to make the ending more exciting. This certainly worked in 2021 Penn State vs Illinois game and is the USFL so probability it might worked well for XFL too.
XFL’s 3-point tries and tiered extra-points
Following the touchdowns, the XFL doesn’t allow teams to kick extra points. Instead of that the teams must try to get into the end zone to tack on either one, two or three points to score.
A one point try is attempted from the two yard line, a two point try comes from the five yard line while three point try comes after the 10 yard line and it is up to the coaches to decide which type of conversion to attempt.
XFL kickoff rules
Apart from above mentioned rules, the XFL will be using its modified kickoff rules that they used in 2020. Under this rule, the system will require the two teams to line up 5 yards apart from one another. The kicking team will line up at their opponent’s 35 yard line while the returning team will line up at the 30 yard line.
This rule makes kickoffs a bit safety as the collision between blockers and potential tackles won’t be as large.
