The qualifying for Mutua Madrid Open played on red clay will begin on April 26th, followed by the main draw on April 28th. The final will be held on May 7th. The clay event is part of the WTA 1000 series. The event was formerly held on blue courts for the first time in 2012, however, after being criticised, it was moved back to its customary red clay. While both Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic were defeated on blue clay, they guided the championship back to its normal court surface.
