Magda Linette vs Linda Fruhvirtova

With a brilliant comeback victory against Magda Linette to win the WTA Chennai Open championship at the SDAT Tennis Stadium on Sunday, Linda Fruhvirtova escaped a scathing test of her developing reputation as the next major Czech tennis star.

The victory marked the 17-year-first old’s Tour-level victory, making her the youngest winner since Coco Gauff triumphed in 2021 (Parma) and the first Czech woman to do so since Nicole Vaidisova in 2006. (Strasbourg).

Being on the court for a good three hours longer than Linette this tournament, Fruhvirtova appeared to be a step slower in the first set. It was her second consecutive three-set match.

With a brief backswing that ends in a wristy flourish, Linette’s game has a sharp feel to it. She skillfully changed Fruhvirtova’s tempo, and thanks to her agility, she was able to run down almost every ball. The 30-year-old took the opening set 6-4 thanks to a break in the ninth game and a brilliant hold that followed, with damage from two excellent kick serves and a drop.

The Pole, however, relaxed in the second set, and her serve varied. She held her first two service games to the loss of just one point before being put under pressure in the fourth. In her first service game, she saved three break points.

Fruhvirtova earned two break chances with a powerful return winner and a strong finish on the right side of a very long rally. Fruhvirtova quickly tied the match after Linette fired a forehand long to fall behind 3-5. Linette again raised her level in the third set.

A nearly full crowd encouraged Fruhvirtova to make the play, pressuring the Linette serve to go up 30-15. She had rediscovered her aggressive touch. She hit a beautiful forehand winner to end a drawn-out rally, demonstrating her composure, tenacity, and lack of nerves in full. After Linette’s forced error, the score was 5-4, and Linette had the opportunity to serve for the championship.
