Iga Swiatek leads for the WTA Player of the Year 2022

World No. 1 Swiatek of Poland is a heavy favourite for the prestigious WTA Player of the Year award as she has been dominant in the year 2022 having won 2 Grand Slams among the eight titles.

The Polish finished the year as the WTA World No. 1 for the first time in her career after a season marked by the wins of her second and third Grand Slam tournaments, at Roland Garros and the US Open.

Swiatek became the first player to finish a season with more over 10,000 ranking points since Serena Williams in 2015 by winning six further titles, including four at WTA 1000 tournaments in Doha, Indian Wells, Miami, and Rome. A 37-match victory streak between February and June was the longest WTA stretch since 1990. She finished the season with 67 match victories, which is the highest since Serena Williams in 2013.

Ons Jabeur of Tunisia, who made history by coming in second place at Wimbledon and the US Open, will compete in the same category at the WTA Player Awards. In 2022, the 28-year-old made it to two Grand Slam finals while winning two WTA titles.

Jabeur was the first Arab or North African woman to make it to a major semifinal at Wimbledon. She improved on it by making it to the championship match, but she ultimately fell short to Elena Rybakina. The Tunisian also advanced to the US Open final but lost to Witek, denying her a second chance to win her maiden Grand Slam championship.

One of the other prominent names in this group is Caroline Garcia, who had a career-best season and won four titles, including the WTA Finals.

The other three contenders for the WTA Player of the Year title are Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, and Elena Rybakina. When Rybakina won the Wimbledon championship, she became the first Kazakh to win a Major. Pegula won the WTA 1000 Guadalajara Open and advanced to the quarterfinals of three major tournaments, while Gauff came in second in the French Open.

The WTA Comeback Player of the Year nominees include Tatjana Maria, Donna Vekic, and Daria Saville in addition to Serena Williams, who tops the list. At Eastbourne, where she competed in doubles and reached the semifinals with Jabeur, the 23-time Grand Slam champion made her comeback after almost a year. Later, the American lost at Wimbledon in the opening round. Serena continued her impressive career by making it to the third round of the US Open before calling it quits.

On the other hand, following a remarkable season for the Czech pair, Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova will want to add the WTA Doubles Team of the Year honour to their list of achievements. They later won prizes at three of the four Major tournaments namely the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.
