Indian Wrestlers’ Performance in 2022 World Wrestling Championships

At the 2022 World Wrestling Championships on Friday, Olympic silver medalist Ravi Dahiya was eliminated in second round of the 57 kg freestyle division. Ravi, who took home gold at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, was destroyed 10-0 by Gulomjon Abdullaev of Uzbekistan. Later, the Uzbek wrestler’s quarterfinal defeat put an end to Ravi’s hopes of advancing for a bronze medal fight via repechage. Ravi defeated Razwan Marian Kovacs of Romania 10-0 to advance to the second round but was no match for Abdullaev.

Naveen, on the other hand, advanced to the bronze medal match by defeating Uzbekistan’s Sirbaz Talgat, the fourth-ranked wrestler in the world, 11-3 in the preliminary round of the 70 kg repechage. On Friday night, the bronze-medal match between Commonwealth Games winner Naveen and Arnazar Akmataliev will take place.

Two-time European champion Anastasia Nichita won the 59kg championship to become Moldova’s second female global champion in another exciting moment of the World Wrestling Championships. As of now, Indian wrestlers have performed below expectation and bagged only one bronze medal to sit at 24th position in the medal tally.
