Indian Wrestlers’ Performance in 2022 World Wrestling Championships
Bajrang Punia, a three-time medalist at the World Championships, was defeated by American Yianni Diakomihalis in the 65 kg quarterfinal. Punia, who had been severely injured before the quarterfinal, was no match for Diakomihalis, who won by virtue of technical superiority. However, the American advanced to the final, keeping Punia in the running for bronze via repechage.
Punia had a gash to the head during his first match that necessitated lengthy medical attention to stop the bleeding. However, he went on to defeat Alejandro Valdes 5-4 on points. Elsewhere, with a 3-0 defeat to Iran’s Yones Emamichoghaei in the men’s 74 kg bronze medal match, Sagar Jaglan was denied a medal. In other matches of the day, Pankaj Malik (61 kg) and Vicky Chahar (97 kg) both lost their qualification matches in the very last seconds of their contests.
