In their opening encounter of the World Team Table Tennis Championships on Saturday, the Indian women’s team lost 2-3 against fifth-seeded German team. India’s top-ranked female paddler Manika Batra lost both of her matches, which cost India the chance to win despite superb performances by Sreeja Akula and Diya Chitale.
Sreeja’s finest victory to date came in the second game when she defeated World No. 14 Nina Mittelham 11-9, 12-10, 11-7. Later, Diya defeated Sabine Winter with a score of 11-9, 11-8, 6-11, 13-11 but in the fourth game, Manika was defeated by Nina via score of 11-7, 6-11, 7-11, 8-11 as Germany forced the tie into fifth match. However, Ying defeated Sreeja 11-3, 11-5, 11-4 in the decisive game and sealed the victory for Germany.
Reigning champion China is seeded first in both the men’s and women’s team competitions with elimination round scheduled to begin on October 5. The women’s Indian team will attempt to go to the knockout phase, but it won’t be easy after an early defeat.

From September 30 to October 9, 2022, Chengdu, China will host the World Team Table Tennis Championships. There are 28 teams competing in the women’s tournament, and 16 of those teams will advance to the Round of 16.
