Following his dominant 5-2 win against Richie Howson in the final of 2023 World Seniors Darts Championship, Robert Thornton has been crowned as the champion. Earlier in the tournament’s semi-final, Robert Thornton earned a whitewash victory against Kevin Painter and Richie Howson bagged 3-1 win against Leonard Gates. On his way to the final, Richie Howson claimed the standout victory of the day as he stunned legendary player Phil Taylor by score of 3-1 during their quarterfinal tie.
Taylor’s 2-1 deficit to Colin McGarry in the opening round gave him pause, but he stormed back to win the crucial set 3-2. With some classic mind tricks on his opponent, the 16-time world match play champion defeated Darren Johnson 3-1 in the second round to qualify for the quarterfinal. Taylor’s flawless first set gave him in control heading into the quarterfinal encounter against Howson, maintaining his momentum. Howson, whose best professional performance was finishing in the top 24 in the world masters, rallied to win the match 3-1.
