From July 16 to July 24, 2022, the competition took held in the Winter Gardens in Blackpool. In the quarterfinals, defending champion Peter Wright was upset by Dimitri Van den Bergh 16–14. While this was going on, Michael van Gerwen defeated Gerwyn Price 18-14 to win his third World Matchplay championship.
2022 World Matchplay Final Day Results, Fixtures And Score
Van Gerwen overcame a slow start to defeat the Welshman 18-14, reeling off the final five legs without a hitch to win the top prize of £200,000 and the prestigious Phil Taylor Trophy. Price was attempting to become the first Welshman to win the World Matchplay championship, and for long stretches of time, it looked as though he would succeed. However, Van Gerwen pulled off an incredible comeback.
Despite his physical issues, Van Gerwen has had a fantastic few months as he follows up a sixth Premier League triumph with his first televised ranking trophy since his victory in the Players Championship Finals in November 2020.
Following a stellar campaign that included a 104.64 average against Jose De Sousa and a nine-darter in his victory against Danny Noppert in the semi-final, Price earned £100,000 as runner-up. The 37-year-old was unable to cap off a stellar week with his ninth PDC televised victory, but with Peter Wright’s quarterfinal elimination, Price has reclaimed the top spot.
