Croatia Rapid & Blitz 2022 2022 Schedule, Date, Format, and Players
The top 10 grandmasters compete in a rapid chess round-robin before playing in the double round-robin of blitz. This format incorporated blitz and rapid chess to keep spectators interested and make them eagerly anticipate the games each day. The first three days of the competition included rapid chess matches, and the latter two days featured blitz games.
A ten-player single round-robin rapid chess competition was held over the first three days with a time limit of 25 minutes for all moves and a 10-second increment starting with move one. Over the course of the remaining two days of the competition, 18 rounds of 5+2 blitz were played.
Final Results, Standings, Nail-biting Race Decided, And Winner
Jorden van Foreest, who started the day two points behind Magnus was the first opponent for Magnus on Sunday but lost the match. Magnus then managed a draw against Veselin Topalov despite being in a terrible position. The draw was made all the more significant by the fact that in the same round, Magnus’ closest competitors Wesley So and Ian Nepomniachtchi both fell to Alireza Firouzja and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.
On paper, the third round of the day appeared to be enormous. Wesley So needed to win because he was two points behind Magnus and owned the black pieces. A draw was decided upon in the end. Before Magnus defeated Ian Nepomniachtchi’s challenge, a lackluster draw against MVL also proved to be vital.
Magnus just needed a tie in one of his final two games after an outstanding save against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov brought him close to the title. Carlsen won the championship with one round remaining despite shockingly losing both of his games, which was possible because his close competitors also lost. Magnus can now fly to India in good spirits for the forthcoming Olympiad because he has finally won his first trophy after declaring he would no longer compete in World Championship matches.
