Lukeman took advantage of Wade’s sluggish start to win the first set without a challenge, only for Wade to rally from a leg down to win the second. Wade split the first four legs of the last set as a 121 finish forced a sudden-death leg. However, Lukeman came back from an earlier miss to land double eight for the biggest win of his career, and Wade was unable to secure tops. Lukeman will now face Ross Smith, who overcame a set deficit and a 2-1 deficit in set two to defeat Andrew Gilding.
A tantalizing second round matchup between 2020 champion Gerwyn Price and Masters victor Joe Cullen will take place on Thursday after their impressive victories in respective Leicester openers. Rob Cross, the 2017 winner, was defeated by Daryl Gurney over the course of three sets. After the former World Champion won the second set with a score of 111, the Northern Irish ace easily took the third set. The second-round opponent for Gurney will be Madars Razma, who defeated Ryan Searle in three sets in his World Grand Prix debut.
On Wednesday, the second round gets underway as the winners from Monday take the Morningside Arena stage once more. Among the four ties is a matchup between five-time champion Michael van Gerwen and Stephen Bunting. The current champion Jonny Clayton takes on Dimitri Van den Bergh, Peter Wright, the world champion, takes on Krzysztof Ratajski from Poland, and Adrian Lewis competes against Chris Dobey.
