On yet another unforgettable night, the Dutchman added the World Grand Prix championship to his earlier victories in the Premier League and World Matchplay. The World Grand Prix was where Van Gerwen won his first PDC televised championship ten years prior, and to mark the occasion, he won the £120,000 top prize and hoisted a newly designed trophy.
2022 World Grand Prix Darts Michael van Gerwen vs Nathan Aspinall Final Results, Score, & Match Summary
Van Gerwen easily defeated Peter Wright in the semi-finals on Saturday, and he also breezed through the first four sets of the championship match to put himself in position to win. He took out 83 to break and double 10 to win the first set after finishing the first leg with a 116. Each the second and third sets required a full five legs, but Van Gerwen prevailed in the decisive leg on both occasions, building a three-set lead. Aspinall had the lead in set four, but five doubles missed over the next two legs proved costly, giving Van Gerwen the set and a 4-0 advantage.
When Aspinall was down a leg in set five, the audience at Morningside Arena encouraged him to mount a valiant comeback with three consecutive legs. In the opening leg of set six, Van Gerwen missed six starting doubles, and Aspinall won back-to-back legs to win the second set by a 3-1 margin. Despite a superb 12-darter by Van Gerwen, who missed seven double starts in leg four, the comeback continued in set seven as Aspinall followed two earlier 14-darters with double five to win a third consecutive set.
In the first two legs of set eight, Aspinall missed darts at double top, allowing Van Gerwen to post a pair of double tens and move one leg closer to victory. Aspinall struck tops to keep his chances alive in leg three and the same bed to tie the set, but he missed two doubles in the nail-biting fourth leg, allowing Van Gerwen to suitably win his sixth World Grand Prix title on double six.
