A coaching restructure at BAM has seen Wong Choong Hann names as the new coach of the men’s singles badminton team
A largely disappointing 2021 in the world of badminton saw massive upheaval at the Badminton Association of Malaysia. In a bid to get its house in order and ensure 2022 was a more successful year for the country, BAM decided to not only opt for a coaching restructure but also change its modus operandi.
BAM Gets New Singles And Doubles Coach After Massive System Restructure
BAM have reverted to having two heads, one for singles and one for doubles as opposed to just coaching having one director in Wong Choong Hann to whom all the coaches reported. Wong will now only be incharge of the singles department while his deputy Rexy Mainaky has been promoted as the second coaching director and will be tasked with taking over the doubles setup.
Both Choong Hann and Rexy will be overseen by Datuk Kenny Goh who will be the coaching and training (CNT) committee chairman. The changes come shortly after the country returned home empty handed from the BWF World Championships in Spain.
In the midst of the chopping and changing, national women’s doubles head coach Chan Chong Ming has left the association after only 18 months in the role.
“After careful consideration, the BAM has reached a decision to accept the resignation letter tendered by women’s doubles coach Chan Chong Ming on December 29. The 41-year-old left his position by mutual consent after joining in July 2020,” said BAM.
BAM has also gone onto deny reports of top player Lee Zii Jia looking to quit and continue his journey as only a professional player.
