In the men’s singles Wimbledon final of Wheelchair Tennis, Japan’s Shingo Kunieda, a three-time Paralympic winner, and Britain’s Alfie Hewett, a silver medalist, will face off. On Court 14, the world’s top-ranked player Kunieda of Japan defeated Joachim Gérard of Belgium with class, winning the first set 6-2 and the second 6-1.
The second-ranked player in the world, Britain’s Hewett, faced a far tougher opponent on Court One in Argentina’s Gustavo Fernandez. Fernandez easily won the opening set, 6-2, before pushing his opponent to the edge in the decisive second set. Hewett had to win the set in a tiebreaker, but he handled himself well and prevailed 7-6. Hewett was able to end the tie by taking the deciding set 6-4.
The world’s top-ranked Diede de Groot of the Netherlands will take on Japan’s Yui Kamiji in the women’s wheelchair singles final. On Court Three, the seasoned Grand Slam champions dominated their semi-final matches. De Groot, the defending champion, defeated Momoko Ohtani of Japan 6-1, 6-0, and Kamiji defeated Jiske Griffioen of the Netherlands 6-1, 6-2. Kamiji, who first reached the singles final, is competing for her first wheelchair singles Wimbledon championship while De Groot is vying for her fourth.
On Saturday, July 9, the women’s wheelchair singles championship match is set to take place. Meanwhile. Sunday is set aside for the men’s wheelchair singles championship on July 10.
