What led to ejection of Max Scherzer from the field?
According to reports, Max Scherzer is facing a 10-game ban after being dismissed from his start against the Dodgers on Wednesday due to a foreign substance. Both Scherzer and Mets manager Buck Showalter assert that rosin, a legal chemical, and sweat were the cause of the pitcher’s hand’s stickiness.
Scherzer was ejected as a result of the umpiring crew, which was presided over by Phil Cuzzi, not accepting it. According to the rules, Scherzer will get an automatic 10-game ban from Major League Baseball because the expulsion was brought on by a foreign substance. The pitcher would be given a hearing where he would have the chance to present his case.
Scherzer looked to have repeatedly told the umpires it was rosin on camera. Rosin, a sticky material made from fir tree sap, is used by pitchers to counteract sweat and moisture and maintain a solid grip on the baseball. MLB allows the use of rosin, however it cannot be coupled with another drug.

Fortunately for Mets fans, this isn’t the case and right now, if the league maintains the decision against Scherzer, he may be suspended for ten games. The eight-time All-Star will also be given the chance to contest the length of his ban.
MLB has experience with these occurrences; in 2021, pitchers Hector Santiago and Caleb Smith were also suspended for 10 games after being ejected for using a sticky substance. This was Scherzer’s fourth career ejection. MLB will now get a report of the event from the umpire crew, which will be examined to see if a suspension is necessary.
