Mirza has become the first woman lieutenant doctor in the Indian Army after finishing her MBBS from the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) and hails from Durg in Chhattisgarh.

The journey of Zoya Mirza from her home to the Indian Army has been challenging. In her 12th grade, she chose Biology and started her efforts to pass the Medical Entrance Exam (NEET) (National Eligibility and Entrance Test).

Sharing her story with media, Zoya mentioned that her family’s financial situation was unstable and she initially attended a lesser-known private school. Later, she transferred to KPS located in Bhilai for her higher education.

During her first attempt, Zoya missed passing and chose to focus on her graduation from the University of Delhi. Encouraged by her grandparents, she decided to give her entrance exam another try. Taking a gap year, she moved to Kota to prepare for her NEET exam.

She shared that despite her mother landing a government teaching job and her father working as a pitch curator at the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh, her family still struggled to finance her studies in Kota and had to borrow money.

Mirza’s confidence took a hit during her days in Kota after observing other students outperform her in practice tests. Despite this setback, she continued to study diligently. Her preparation was further disrupted when she had to return home due to her grandmother’s serious health issues.

Her grandmother started suffering from numerous ailments just 15-20 days before the NEET exams. Even with these challenges, Mirza managed to secure the 13th rank, narrowly missing a seat as admissions closed at the 12th rank.

It was Mirza’s grandmother who encouraged her to appear in the exam again. Taking her grandmother’s advice, Mirza decided to prepare for the NEET locally in Bhilai while staying at home. Her determination paid off, and in 2019, she achieved a remarkable score of 622 on the NEET, earning her a place at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC).

Zoya Mirza became the first lieutenant doctor from her state in the Indian Army and will start her service in Jammu and Kashmir, marking the beginning of a promising career in both the military and medicine. Her father, Shamim Mirza, expressed immense pride in her accomplishments, noting that her passion and dedication to helping others will make a positive impact wherever she serves.

Mirza’s journey is a testament to the power of dreams and perseverance, overcoming obstacles to achieve victory. Her story inspires many young people and encourages young girls to pursue their dream careers.
