Know more about W V Raman as reports surfaced online suggesting that, Raman and Gautam Gambhir were interviewed for the position of head coach of India’s men’s cricket team on Tuesday.

For the unversed, the BCCIโ€™s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) conducted the interviews. While Gautam Gambhir was an anticipated candidate, WV Raman’s name was a surprise.

The former Indian cricketer from Tamil Nadu was a left-handed batsman and a part-time left-arm spinner, and he was part of the Indian squad that won the 1990-91 Asia Cup.

Woorkeri Venkat Raman is a former Indian cricketer and former coach of Indiaโ€™s womenโ€™s national cricket team. The former player who played as a opening batsman was born in Madras, India on May 23, 1965.

The 59-year-old became the women’s team head coach in 2018 and served until 2021. Raman, hailing from Tamil Nadu, had a brief international career, playing 11 Tests and 27 ODIs. However, he had a successful domestic career representing Tamil Nadu.

Raman made his Test debut in 1987 against the West Indies, scoring 83 runs in the second innings. He played 10 more Tests and 27 ODIs for India, scoring his only international century against South Africa in 1992.

He was also part of the Indian team that won the ACC Asia Cup in 1990-91 by defeating Sri Lanka.

W V Ramanโ€™s Coaching Career

In contrast to his playing career, Raman has achieved notable success as a coach. Appointed head coach of Tamil Nadu in 2006, he led the team to victory in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

He also had a managerial stint in the IPL, managing Kings XI Punjab in 2013 before returning to coach Tamil Nadu. Raman was the batting coach for Kolkata Knight Riders when they won their second IPL title. From 2018 to 2021, he managed Indiaโ€™s womenโ€™s national team.

Though Raman is believed to be married, there is currently no information available about his spouse or children.

W V Raman has demonstrated his expertise and comprehensive understanding of the game.

However, as per numerous reports, the World Cup winner and mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders, Gautam Gambhir, is likely to be the top choice for the position of head coach of Indiaโ€™s menโ€™s national team.

In another update, the CAC is scheduled to interview an undisclosed overseas candidate tomorrow. The tenure of the next Indian cricket team coach will begin on July 1, 2024, and continue until December 31, 2027.
