About Mahavir Phogat
For the curious, born in the Bhiwani district of Haryana, Mahavir Singh Phogat, hails from Balali in the Charkhi Dadri district. He comes from a Hindu Jat family and was born under the zodiac sign Virgo.
Phogat is an Indian amateur wrestler, senior Olympics coach, and a politician. He is the father and trainer of the Phogat sisters, Geeta & Babita. Amir Khan’s starrer hindi biographical film “Dangal” is loosely based on his life.

Mahavir Singh Phogat is married to Daya Shobha Kaur and has four daughters, namely, Geeta, Babita, Ritu, and Sangita. As a foster father, he also cared for his nieces, Vinesh and Priyanka, after his brother Rajpal Phogat was killed in a land dispute. His net worth isn’t known but Vinesh is worth Rs.36.5 crores.
Standing at 170 cm (1.70 m), Mahavir whose age isn’t known trained all six Phogat children. While Geeta, Babita, and Vinesh are international players, Ritu has won a gold medal at the national championship.
Priyanka and Sangita has also won medals in age-level international championships. In 2016, Mahavir Singh Phogat was awarded the Dronacharya Award by the Government of India.
He is the father and coach of Geeta Phogat, who won India’s first gold medal in women’s wrestling in the 55 kg freestyle category at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and was the first Indian woman wrestler to qualify for the Olympics.
