Who Is Gurdeep Singh?
Gurdeep Singh is an Indian weightlifter who has recently been in the news because he won the bronze medal in the men’s 109+ kg division at the Commonwealth Games 2022 which were currently going on in Birmingham, UK.
He was born in 1995 in the Punjabi town of Punian. His father is a farmer by profession. In 2010, he along with his family moved to the Punjabi hamlet of Majri Rasluri of Punjab’s Khanna where he began exercising weights.
His father encouraged him to start weightlifting largely so that he would be active and not simply sit around all day. Gurdeep’s initial coach in Khanna saw him as a potential athlete and suggested Indian team head coach Vijay Sharma add him to the national camp.
He most recently joined the Indian National Camp in 2015, and for the Heavyweight division, he is the country’s best weightlifter despite having only taken up the sport as a hobby.
He is presently 26 years old and his height stands at 6 feet 2 inches.
His Career
His weightlifting journey began when he earned a silver medal at the 12th South Asian Games in 2016. At the IWF World Weightlifting Championships in Anaheim, USA, in 2017, he then broke three senior national records in the +105 kg weight category.
