The Origin Of Qixi Festival
A romantic fable about the oxherd Niulang and a fairy named Zhi Nu, who fell in love despite their differences, is connected to the celebration. The queen mother of the heavens brought her baby girl back to heaven, separating the couple after they had married and had two children.
The Milky Way, which runs between the Earth and the sky, was first conceived by the queen’s mother as a river to divide her daughter from the oxherd. The Qixi Festival was established when the couple’s anguish was felt throughout the cosmos and the queen permitted their meeting on Magpie Bridge.

Children gather wildflowers and put them on an ox’s horns as a tribute to the oxen.
One of the most well-liked customs in certain places is women cooking traditional foods. They are also engaged in threading needles in the moonlight, and praying to Zhi Nu to grant their desires. Qiaoguo, a fried pastry composed of oil, flour, sugar, and honey, is one of the customary foods served for the event.
As part of certain ancient practices, women spend the day creating a display of various drinks and fruits and reading poetry till the wee hours of the night. Some travel to the mountains to get water in Hunan province. They use this water, which they consider holy, to wash their hair in order to receive Zhi Nu’s blessing.

In addition to Qixi, Chinese people observe other romantic holidays as well. Like the rest of the world, they also observe the customary Valentine’s Day on February 14 and the Lantern Festival during the celebration of the New Year.
