V Kamakoti bio

Age 56 Veezhinathan Kamakoti is the director at IIT Madras who has been serving at the role since 2022. He is an alumnus of IIT Madras, and an organic farmer himself. He is notably a recipient of the DRDO Academy Excellence Award (2013). Kamakoti recently went viral following his speech during Maatu Pongal, on the second day of the Tamil month Thai. The event is dedicated towards cows and bulls, acknowledging their contributions towards agriculture. He is an expert in artificial intelligence.

He was born in Chennai in 1968 and his father, a professor of Sanskrit at the University of Madras, hailed from a family of academicians, while his mother was a homemaker. Both his paternal and maternal grandparents resided in villages and Prof. Kamakoti’s early childhood was primarily spent in the villages of Mudikondan and Vishnupuram, located in southern Tamil Nadu, where he resided with his grandparents.

His father V Kamakot died in 2024 aged 87 in Chennai after suffering from a brief illness. From the Mahaperiyava community, Prof.N.Veezhinatha was the former HoD, Sanskrit, University of Madras.

Education

V Kamakoti obtained his education from the Indian Institute Of Technology Madras (IIT–Madras).

Kamakoti did his preschool education in Chennai and then secured admission to the prestigious PS Senior Secondary School in Mylapore.

Dr. V. Kamakoti is an alumnus of SVCE ( Batch of 1989). He completed BE in Computer Science and Engineering from University of Madras followed by MS (By research) and PhD from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras.

Profession and career

Prior to working on his current role as the Director of IIT Madras where he earns a monthly salary of Rs.2,25,000 along with government benefits, Kamakoti previously worked as a professor for the computer science and engineering department. He then worked as the head of the AI task force under the Union Commerce Ministry. He also served as a member of the National Security Advisory Council. Kamakoti has also worked as an associate dean of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research (ICSR) at IIT Madras.

V Kamakoti is currently married to his wife, Mrs. Renuka Kamakoti.

Video of Director V Kamakoti goes viral

Just recently, a video of IIT Director V Kamakoti making some comments about ‘Gomutra’ went viral online. He made the comments citing scientific studies on cow urine, including a 2019 study published in Nature. The study explored on peptide profiling and bioactive properties in gomutra. He stated:

Gomutra has anti-bacterial properties”

The video of Kamakoti was shot during an event in Chennai, sparking criticism from various political leaders and organisations. V Kamakoti was speaking at a Go Samrakshana Sala event during the Maatu Pongal celebrations last Wednesday. In his speech, Kamakoti also highlighted the importance of protecting indigenous cattle breeds and promoting organic farming. He stated:

Gomiyam (cow urine/gomutra) has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and digestive properties. It is useful as a medicine for conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome.”

V Kamakoti faces backlash

Kamakoti’s remarks have drawn in all kinds of backlash and criticism. Politician Dravidar Kazhagam denounced the claims, calling it “shameful”. Meanwhile, DMK leader TKS Elangovan accused him of allegedly aligning with the central government’s agenda to “spoil” education. Meanwhile, Congress leader Karti P. Chidambaram also took to X, stating:

Peddling pseudoscience by @iitmadras Director is most unbecoming @IMAIndiaOrg.”
