Vaishnavi’s tragic death has seemingly sent shockwaves throughout Pune and beyond, igniting authorities and women’s rights groups to step in.

Vaishnavi was found dead at her husband Shashank Hagawane’s house on May 16 in the Bhukum village of the Mushi taluka and the police booked her husband Shashank, mother-in-law Lata Rajendra Hagawane, father-in-law Rajendra Hagawane, sister-in-law Karishma Hagawane, and brother-in-law Sushil Hagawane for abetment of suicide and the Pimpri-Chinchwad police arrested Shashank, Lata and Karishma, while Rajendra and Sushil are on the run. The FIR at the Bavdhan police station invoked charges related to dowry death, abetment of suicide, and physical assault and others.

Vaishnavi Hagawane commits suicide after shocking dowry demands

A 23-year-old woman named Vaishnavi Shashank Hagawane reportedly committed suicide on afternoon of Friday, May 16. Hagawane hung herself at her residence in Bhukum, Mulshi tehsil, Pune, leaving her friends and family in shock. Upon further investigations, police and her family allege that Vaishanavi carried out the tragic act after facing relentless mental and physical abuse from her in-laws. The family have since filed a complaint citing dowry harassment against her husband’s family at Bavdhan police station.

Investigations and charges

In response to the incident, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken Vaishnavi’s death and the dowry harassment allegations very seriously. According to Vaishnavi’s family, the Hagawane family reportedly demanded 51 tolas of gold, a Fortuner car, and silver utensils as dowry. Moreover, the family insisted on hosting the wedding celebrations at an extravagant venue. Law enforcement officials are now investigating all of these demands and the subsequent abuse.

Vaishnavi Hagawane was the daughter-in-law of Rajendra Hagawane, who is a leader in the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). She was only 23 years old at the time of her death, and her death has taken the entire country by storm. Vaishnavi’s story has highlighted the harsh realities that many women face in marital homes.

Vaishnavi’s father Anil Kaspate said, ”When we saw the body of Vaishnavi, we realised that there were injury marks all over… She was murdered, and therefore, the Hagawane family should be charged with murder.”

Kaspate said the couple got married in 2023 after the families agreed to their relationship but soon after their wedding, Vaishnavi was harassed for dowry and tortured and her husband and mother-in-law used to harass her on flimsy grounds.

Prior to her death, Vaishnavi Hagawane was married to a man named Shashank Hagawane, son of Rajendra Hagawane. The couple had a 10 month old son together. Rajendra Hagawane and several of his family members are now under investigations in the recent dowry harassment case.

Vaishnavi began facing physical and mental abuse within six months of the marriage in 2023 and she admitted that she regretted her decision in a now viral video.

The Nationalist Congress Party has expelled Rajendra Hagawane and his son Sushil both currently on the run said Pune district NCP chief Shivaji Garje in a statement.
