Who is Lily Yohannes?
Lilian Isabella Yohannes is an Eritrean-American professional soccer player who was born on June 12, 2007 in Springfield, Virginia, U.S. She plays for Dutch team Ajax in the Vrouwen Eredivisie. The midfielder stands 5 ft 8 in (1.73 m) tall.
She was born in the US, but when she was ten years old, her family relocated to the Netherlands.
A look at Lily Yohannes’ career
When Yohannes was fifteen years old, AFC Ajax offered her a professional three-year contract that would expire in June 2026.
On November 15, 2023, at the age of 16, she made history by becoming the youngest player to ever start a group stage match in the UEFA Women’s Champions League and the youngest American player to compete in the competition.
With goals by Tiny Hoekstra in the 34th minute and Sherida Spitse in the first minute of injury time in the first half, Ajax went on to defeat Paris Saint-Germain FC 2–0.
Talking about her international career, Yohannes attended the U-15 and U-16 young national team camps and is qualified to play for the United States; however, she has not been called up since. She attended a U-19 camp with the Netherlands in December 2023, despite not yet being a citizen of the Netherlands.
On March 26, 2024, prior of the 2024 SheBelieves Cup, Yohannes, then 16 years old, was called up to the senior team for the United States. Since the age of sixteen, she became the youngest player to be called up to a senior camp since 2017.

Lily Yohannes’ father’s name is Daniel Yahannes and her mother is Semhar Bokretsion. Two has two other siblings and one of them, Ethen Yohannes is a football player for Wake Forest University and the US Under 15-17 national team.
She is the grand daughter of legendary player Bokretsion Gebrehiwot.
