U Vimal Kumar bio

U Vimal Kumar is an Indian former badminton player who was born on November 19, 1962, in Kerala, India. He is currently 61 years old and serves as the coach of upcoming Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen. The former badminton star notably won the Indian National title consecutively for two years, in 1988 and 1989. U Vimal Kumar is also the Co-founder, Director and Chief Coach in the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy.

U Vimal Kumar stands at a height of 1.84 m (6 ft 0 in), and roughly weighs around 78 kg (172 lb).

Education

During his childhood, Kumar attended Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School.

Career

U Vimal Kumar rose to prominence after winning the French Open in 1983 and then repeating the same in 1984. He then won the Welsh International Open in 1988 and 1991. Throughout his career, he has also represented India at various international events including the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Kumar notably won the bronze medal in badminton at the 1986 Asian Games in the Men’s team event.

Following his retirement, he served as the National chief coach of the Indian badminton squad for several years. However, he quit the post in 2006, and instead focussed on coaching youngsters at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy. He has previously coached Indian badminton stars like Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap. He is currently serving as the coach of Lakshya Sen.
