Champion trap shooter Havildar Preeti Rajak was promoted on Sunday, making her the first female Subedar in Indian Army history.

Following the Army’s decision to allow women to join the Corps of Military Police (CMP), this marks the first time a female soldier has been promoted to the rank of junior commissioned officer (JCO). And a statement from the Army read:

The Indian Army takes immense pride in announcing the promotion of Havildar Preeti Rajak, a formidable trap shooter, to the esteemed rank of Subedar.”

The Army statement also read:

The remarkable achievements of Subedar Preeti Rajak serve as a beacon of inspiration for generations of young women, encouraging them to forge their path within the Indian Army and excel in the realm of professional shooting.”

Who is Preeti Rajak?

21 year old Preeti Rajak, born in November 2002 in Madhya Pradesh, is a champion trap shooter and is the first women subedar in the Indian Army. She had joined the Army (CMP) on 22 December. She is the first meritorious sportswomen in the shooting discipline to enlist in the Army as a havildar, according to an Army statement.

Her current ranking in the Track Women Event is sixth in India. She trains at the Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) to be ready for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Rajak took home a silver medal in the women’s trap team competition at the 19th Asian Games 2022, which were hosted in Hangzhou, China in 2023. She received her first out-of-turn promotion in recognition of her outstanding achievements.

At the Junior World Shotgun Championships in Lonato, Italy, in July, she competed for India in 2019. Three years later, she competed for Senior India in the ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany, in May, and the team won silver.

Two months later, in Changwon, South Korea, she competed for India in the trap events of the World Shotgun Championships. She competed in the trap event at Osijek, Croatia during the Junior World Shotgun Championships in September 2022.

She competed in the Shotgun World Cup in Doha in March of 2023. In Almaty, Kazakhstan, on May 27 and 28, 2023, she took part in the Shotgun World Cup. She also participated in the World Cup in Cairo, Egypt, the same month.  She competed for the Indian trap team in Baku, Azerbaijan, in August at the World Shotgun Championship in August 2023.

Who are the parents of Preeti Rajak?

Proud parents of Preeti Rajak, her mother Jyotsna Rajak is a social worker while her father was the one who understood her daughter’s interest in shooting and moved her to the shooting academy in Madhya Pradesh in 2015.
