Tom Werner began his career in television in 1973 by working for ABC-TV. He was appointed Director of East Coast Prime Time Development in 1975. In 1979, he received a promotion to senior vice president of the prime-time development division.

Following his departure from the network in 1980, he and Marcy Carsey co-founded The Carsey-Werner Company. Werner was admitted to the Television Hall of Fame in 1996.
