The opening ceremony was held on July 26. The main event will take place in Paris, with 16 other towns in Metropolitan France and one subsite in Tahiti, French Polynesia, also hosting events.

At the 131st IOC Session in Lima, Peru, on September 13, 2017, Paris was granted the Games. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved a process to concurrently award the 2024 and 2028 Summer Olympics to the two remaining candidate cities, Paris and Los Angeles, after multiple withdrawals left them in contention. Both bids were praised for their high technical plans and creative ways to use a record-breaking number of temporary and existing facilities. Paris becomes the second city in history to hold the Summer Olympics three times, after doing so in 1900 and 1924.
