While Sam Altman’s mother is identified as Connie Gibstine, a dermatologist, there is no information about his father. Altman has a brother named Jack, who is also the cofounder and CEO at Lattice. He also has another brother named Max, with whom Altman launched a fund called Apollo in 2020. The fund focuses on funding various “moonshot” companies.

Sam is not particularly religious, but he is culturally very Jewish.

During his childhood, Sam Altman attended John Burroughs School, a private, non-sectarian college-preparatory school. He later attended Stanford University in 2005, where he studied computer science for two years before dropping out. Sam dropped out alongside two of his classmates in order to work full time on their mobile app, Loopt. Loopt was an app that shared a user’s location with their friends.

Professional career

After dropping out of college, Altman worked on developing an app called Loopt with two of his friends. The company reached a $175 million valuation, but after failing to garner enough interest, the founders sold it for $43 million in 2012. After this, Altman later founded a venture fund called Hydrazine Capital, which raised over $21 million. Altman invested 75% of this amount into YC companies.

Eventually, Paul Graham, the founder of Y Combinator, appointed Altman as his successor and the new president in 2014. By 2015, Altman was featured on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for venture capital. In his new role, Altman chose a fission and a fusion startup for YC to start a nuclear-energy company of his own. He eventually ended up investing his own money in both companies, besides serving on their boards.

Back in 2015, Altman cofounded OpenAI together with Elon Musk, who is the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX. The pair reportedly created the non-profit artificial intelligence company to make sure AI doesn’t wipe out humans. Altman ultimately stepped down as YC president in March 2019, choosing to focus fully on OpenAI.

Altman became the CEO of OpenAI in May 2019, after the company became a “capped profit” corporation. Around October 21, 2021, Altman, along with his cofounders, Alex Blania and Max Novendstern, launched a global cryptocurrency project. The project was called Worldcoin, and gave worldwide access to crypto. Although the group started the company in 2020, it later stopped operating in a few countries in 2022 following logistics issues.  Under his tenure as CEO, OpenAI also released various popular generative AI tools, including the most popular, DALL-E and ChatGPT. Both of these tools are classified as “generative” AI, where the bot creates its own artwork and text based on the information it receives.
