Nadal demanded that his students treat their equipment with care, and he threatened to cease teaching Rafael if he ever threw his racket out of rage. Throwing a tennis racket, according to Nadal, demonstrated a lack of respect for those who could not buy the same equipment or participate in the sport.

Nadal seeks to instill self-discipline in his players. Rafael was trained on shoddy tennis courts with old tennis balls to demonstrate that it was not the equipment that determined whether he won or lost. He thought that losing was an inevitable part of athletics and that the player was solely responsible for winning or losing.

With the athletes he taught, Nadal had a dictatorial demeanor. He wanted his suggestions to be more than just counsel to the players he was teaching.
