Atiq was murdered shortly after his son, Asad Ahmed, who was killed in a police encounter. Atiq had earlier voiced concerns about being “encountered” by the Uttar Pradesh police prior to his court appearance and had asked for police protection, but the Supreme Court had rejected his plea.
Nevertheless, he was shockingly assassinated by three little-known attackers in front of hundreds of police officers and media workers.

Who is Sunny Singh?
Sunny Singh is a history sheeter who recently made headlines for assassinating gangster turned politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf.
He is a resident of Hamirpur and has no one in his family except one brother named Pintu Singh who runs a tea stall and an old mother. After selling of his portion of the family’s property when his father passed away, he left home.
For more than five years, Sunny Singh hasn’t paid a visit to his mother or brother. According to his brother, he used to be a wanderer and did not work. Speaking to the media, his brother said,
We live separately and don’t know how he became a criminal. We have no idea about the incident.
Police have taken him into custody in 17 cases. He committed his first offense, theft, at Kurara Police Station in 2016. The same year, he also committed a shooting incident close to the Kurara Police Station.
Sunny Singh is also listed as history sheeter number 13 at Kurara Police Station. He is currently 23 years old.
