According to sources, Sunil found success in both Karnataka and Telangana because he and his team received a free hand to work freely.
Sunil Kanugolu helps secure Congress win in Telangana
Sunil and PCC chief A. Revanth Reddy helped form a poll strategy for Congress to secure a win in Telangana. The pair formed a successful strategy that put an end to the K Chandrashekhar Rao-led BRS government, which was looking for a third successive win in the southern state. Aside from Telangana, Kanugolu was also involved in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, following instructions from the party’s central leadership.
However, regional leaders Ashok Gehlot and Kamal Nath failed to come to terms with the poll strategist. Ahead of the Karnataka and Telangana polls, Sunil highlighted the alleged corruption of the K. Chandrashekhar Rao government while projecting welfare guarantees. These factors ultimately struck the interest of the public, who eventually voted for a Congress win.

Sunil Kanugolu is a Congress poll strategist who hails from Karnataka. According to reports, he is currently in his early 40s and plays a central role in developing successful poll strategies for Congress. His most recent achievement was helping Congress secure a win in the Karnataka and Telangana state elections.
Sunil Kanugolu career
Although Sunil is known for his success with Congress, he has worked with the BJP in the past. Kanugolu took part in several BJP poll campaigns, and in 2018, he worked alongside the BJP in Karnataka. He helped them become the single largest party in the state, with 104 seats. Interestingly, he also helped current Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his 2014 campaign. Moreover, he helped the BJP during their political campaigns in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.
Notably, Kanugolu is a former consultant with McKinsey and has former ties with DMK chief MK Stalin. Back in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he oversaw the DMK’s ‘Namakku Naame’ (we are for ourselves) campaign. Later in 2021, he switched sides and worked with the AIADMK against the DMK. He helped the party secure 75 seats in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections.
Just last year, Kanugolu decided to join the Congress and has since worked closely on the Karnataka campaign. Moreover, he was involved in strategizing Rahul Gandhi’s iconic cross-country ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ from Kanyakumari to Kashmir. Now that Sunil Kanugolu has delivered both Karnataka and Telangana to the Congress, he will likely receive more responsibilities in their preparations for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in 2024.
