A knife-wielding man who attacked an anti-Islam rally on Friday is identified as a father of two who neighbors claim became “radicalized” in the past year.
The incident, which took place in Mannheim, Germany, resulted in the death of a 29-year-old police officer and injuries to five others. Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the attack.

The assailant, 25-year-old Sulaiman Ataee who is a Muslim by religion from Afghanistan, was reportedly still alive despite appearing to be shot by police during the altercation.
Neighbors of Ataee described noticing changes in his behavior over recent months.
One neighbor told media that, “He used to be normal. About a year ago, I noticed he had changed. He was helpful before but then suddenly became cold and more aggressive.”

Wife & Children
Ataee, who immigrated to Germany from Afghanistan in 2014 at the age of 15, lives with his German wife and their two young children in a flat in Heppenheim, about 25 minutes from the attack site.
Witnesses Recount
Another neighbor told reporters, “He was inconspicuous. We greeted each other usually. But about a year ago, he changed. He became more reserved and aggressive.”
Neighbors noted the family kept to themselves and were rarely seen interacting with others in their building.
A woman living on the same floor expressed sympathy for Ataee’s wife and children, saying, “They have to suffer now because of what that man did.”
During the attack, a police officer was critically injured and later died after being placed in a coma following emergency surgery.
A joint statement from German police and prosecutors mourned the officer, who was described as giving his life for public safety.

What Did the Video Show?
The attack, captured on a YouTube livestream around 11:30 AM local time on May 31, showed Ataee brandishing a large knife and lunging at far-right activist Michael Stürzenberger. Stürzenberger was stabbed in the face, neck, and chest.
Footage showed other rally participants attempting to subdue the attacker before police intervened. Shots were fired as officers aimed their guns at Ataee, who eventually fell still. Reports from media outlets indicated that Ataee died at the scene.
Victims Condition Update
Four other people were injured in the attack and taken to various hospitals for emergency surgery. The condition of these victims has not been disclosed.
German media identified Ataee as a 25-year-old Afghan national living in Germany. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser stated that the investigation would determine whether the attack had an Islamist motive, emphasizing the ongoing threat of Islamist violence.
Stefanie Kizina, treasurer of the BPE group, labeled the attack as an act of terror, noting its premeditated nature.
Mannheim Police confirmed that the attack took place around 11:35 AM on the market square, resulting in multiple injuries and the use of firearms against the attacker.
They assured the public that there was no ongoing danger, though rail traffic in the area was temporarily suspended.
Forensic teams masked special forces, and state criminal police officers were on the scene shortly after the attack, conducting investigations and cleaning up the aftermath.
