Who Is Suella Braverman?
Suella Braverman is a well-known UK politician. She has been in the news because many reports suggest that she is also in the race of becoming the UK’s next prime minister.
Her full name is Sue-Ellen Cassiana “Suella” Braverman. She was born in Harrow, London, England, on April 3, 1980. She was brought up in Wembley. She often visits the London Buddhist Center and is a member of the Triratna Buddhist Community.
Her father’s name is Christie Fernandes, and her mother’s name is Uma (née Mootien-Pillay). Her parents, who were born in Kenya and Mauritius respectively, and immigrated to Britain in the 1960s, are both of Indian descent.
Suella Braverman received partial scholarships from the Uxendon Manor Primary School in Brent and Heathfield School in Pinner. She later studied law at Queen’s College in Cambridge.
She obtained a master’s degree in European and French law at Panthéon-Sorbonne University while residing in France for two years as an Erasmus Program student and then as an Entente Cordiale Scholar.
In the Commons in February 2018, she tied the knot with Rael Braverman. Together, they both have two kids. Braverman is a member of the Triratna Buddhist Community (formerly the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order) and attends the London Buddhist Centre monthly and took her oath of office on the Dhammapada.
Her Career
Suella Braverman began her political career as a full-time Conservative politician after working as an attorney. In addition to serving as England and Wales’ attorney general from 2020 to 2022, she served as the European Research Group’s chair from 2017 to 2018.
She has served as the Hampshire district’s Fareham MP since 2015. She was named by Theresa May as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for leaving the European Union in the January 2018 cabinet reshuffle. In the February 2020 cabinet shuffle, she was appointed by Boris Johnson as Attorney General for England and Wales and Advocate General for Northern Ireland.
Because of the breadth of her legal expertise, she was appointed as Queen’s Counsel upon her appointment.
Suella Braverman ran for the position of Conservative Party leader when Johnson resigned in July 2022, but she was eliminated from the race after the second voting round. She later backed Liz Truss’s campaign for Conservative leader, and on September 6, 2022, when Truss was elected prime minister, she was named home secretary.
However, on October 19, 2022, she announced his resignation as home secretary due to an impending political crisis.
