With an Asian record distance of 16.32 meters in the men’s shot put F46 category, India’s Sachin Sarjerao Khilari added a Paralympic silver medal to his global title on Wednesday at the current Games.

At his second try to surpass his own previous Asian record of 16.30 meters, which he set when winning gold at the World Para-Athletics Championships in Japan in May, the 34-year-old Khilari produced his finest throw of the day.

With a 16.38-meter throw, Canadian Greg Stewart maintained his gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics. With a height of 16.27 meters, Croatian Luka Bakovic won bronze. The para-athletics silver medal won by Khilari is the eleventh of the current Games. He also took home a gold medal from the Asian Para Games in China the previous year.

Sachin Sarjerao Khilari is 34 years old in 2024 but his exact date of birth remains unknown. Sachin, who was born into a farming family in the Karagani village in Maharashtra’s Sangli district, is a living example of how a disability may be a gift rather than a barrier. He suffered a devastating injury to his left hand at school that left him disabled.

Sachin is a gifted athlete and scholar who has made significant progress as a mechanical engineer. He also helps students prepare for the MPSC and UPSC exams at different universities where he serves as a visiting faculty member.

Khilari’s father, Sarjerao Rangnath Khilari, is an agriculturist and Maharashtra Krishi Bhushan awardee.

Sachin has experienced several hardships, such as the early death of his mother and a disabling disability sustained in a cycling accident. His hand was partially amputated after several surgeries because to gangrene and muscular atrophy.

In spite of these challenges, Sachin’s father unwaveringly supported him and acted as a parent figure to both Sachin and his younger brother. Sachin has flourished in both his athletic and academic endeavours and embraced his disability.

Sachin Sarjerao Khilari secured a silver medal in the men’s shot put F46 category at the Paralympic Games with an Asian record throw of 16.32 meters which was also his personal best in the F46 shot put category.

Athletes participating in a standing posture who have arm deficiencies, reduced muscle power, or impaired passive range of motion in their arms fall under the F46 classification. The left hand of Sachin Sarjerao Khilari is not working well.

After learning about parasports in 2015, Sachin Sarjerao Khilari competed in the National Games in Jaipur in 2017 and took home a gold medal. He then met coach Satayanarayana, who helped him develop his skills and become a full-time competitor by 2019.
