Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua created history this past Saturday when she won the coveted title of Miss Universe 2023 at the famous 72nd edition of the contest held in El Salvador. The crown and sash were given to the 23-year-old Palacios by her American predecessor, R’Bonney Gabriel.

This historic win is the first time a competitor from Nicaragua has taken home the prestigious Miss Universe crown; Anntonia Porsild of Thailand and Moraya Wilson of Australia came in second and third, respectively.
Sheynnis Palacios, who emphasized her appreciation for life’s little pleasures and humility as her distinguishing characteristics, emerged victorious over 84 competitors who competed over the course of a week in the highly coveted competition.
Palacios made a significant statement to the jury, in which she emphasized the need for gender-neutral pay scales and argued in favor of women’s unlimited chances in all fields. She said,
“There is no limit for women.”

Who is Sheynnis Palacios?
Sheynnis Palacios is a renowned Nicaraguan model and beauty pageant winner. She has been in the news because she recently won the title of Miss Universe 2023 at the 72nd edition of the contest held in El Salvador.
Her full name is Sheynnis Alondra Palacios Cornejo. She was born on 30 May 2000 in Managua, Nicaragua. Her mother’s name is Raquel Cornejo, and her father’s name is not known.
After completing her schooling at a local school in Nicaragua, she went on to attend the Universidad Centroamericana, where she pursued a mass communication degree. While in university, she was also a volleyball player who played at the university level.
She is currently 23 years old with her height at 1.8m.
Her career
Sheynnis Palacios embarked on her pageantry journey in 2016, winning Miss Teen Nicaragua. She placed in the Top 10 at Teen Universe 2017 while representing Nicaragua. Sheynnis was crowned Miss World Nicaragua in 2020, but COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the international pageants. At Miss World 2022, she placed in the Top 40.
Palacios qualified for Miss Universe in 2023 after winning Miss Nicaragua. She made history by becoming Nicaragua’s first Miss Universe and the second from Central America after Justine Pasek in 2002.
