Shelly Oberoi elected as the New Delhi mayor- Who is she?

On Wednesday, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party’s Shelly Oberoi defeated the Bhartiya Janta Partyโ€™s Rekha Gupta with 150 votes as opposed to her 116. There had been a ruckus over granting voting rights to nominated members in earlier attempts at elections on January 6, January 24, and February 6.

As a result of the December elections, AAP won 134 of the city’s 250 wards, ending 15 years of BJP rule in the city. It was expected that AAP would appoint the city’s mayor, but they were unable to do so due to a row over the oath ceremony order and the voting rights of LG VK Saxena’s appointed members.

She won the Ward 86 municipal elections on December 7. In the crucial race, she defeated Deepali Kumari by 269 votes.
