Indian athlete Sanket Mahadev Sargar secured India’s first medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 by winning the silver medal in the men’s 55 kg weightlifting division.

Sanket participated in the Commonwealth Games Games for the first time and assisted India to establish a presence in the medal tally of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022.

In all, Sanket pulled 248 kg (113 kg in Snatch and 135 kg in C&J). After his effort of 113kg in Snatch, which was the highest, the Indian weightlifter assumed the lead in the Men’s 55 kg competition. Then he would try the highest lift ever in the clean and jerk, 135 kg.

Unfortunately, Sanket hurt his left arm on his second effort at 139 kg. He would go on to demonstrate incredible courage and perseverance as he came out to do the lift one last time with 139 kg, but he was unsuccessful.

Who Is Sanket Mahadev Sargar?

Sanket Mahadev Sargar is a famous Indian athlete who has recently been in the news because he won India’s first medal at Common Wealth Games 2022.

He was born on October 16, 2000, in Nagpur, Maharashtra’s Sangli village. He attends Shivaji University in Kolhapur and studies history there. He is currently 21 years old.

He began by selling fruit before saving up enough cash to start Sanket Paan, a paan store, followed by a breakfast and tea shop. But soon after realising that he has an interest in sports when he was 12 years old, his father took him to the Digvijay Vyayamshala, a weightlifting gym with a well-known coach. His height stands at 5 feet 9 inches.

Trials at NIS Patiala resulted in Sanket Sagar being chosen to represent India.

His Career

Indian weightlifter Sanket Mahadev Sargar won the gold medal in the men’s 55 kg division at the Tashkent 2021 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships. He also lifted 113 kg, breaking the previous snatch record.

Sanket Mahadev Sagar won the gold medal and established a new national record in the 138 kg clean and jerk lift at the Khelo India University Games 2020.

Sanket, who also owns the national record, won both the Khelo India Youth Games in 2020 and the Khelo India University Games in 2022.
