Sandhya Gurung reappointed as Assistant Coach at 2022 CWG after demands of Lovlina Borgohain
After prominent boxer Lovlina Borgohain wrote a lengthy Twitter post alleging mental harassment ahead of the Commonwealth Games 2022 owing to the absence of her instructors and shady politics, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports sprang into action.
Noting the severe situation, the Department of MYAS posted via their official Twitter account that they had requested the Indian Olympics Association to set up the accreditation of Lovlina Borgohain’s coach as soon as possible. Additionally, the name of Sandhya Gurung has been added to the final list of CWG contingent members based on a particular suggestion made to MYAS by the Sports Authority of India.
Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain revealed on Twitter on Monday that she had been subjected to mental abuse as a result of her coaches, who assisted her in winning medals, regularly changing. The 23-year-old Lovlina Borgohain, who won a bronze medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, gave credit to her coach Sandhya Gurung for her success. She described it as a tremendous reward for the sacrifices she made over the previous eight years. However, Sandhya, a boxer at the national level, had to overcome her own obstacles before becoming Lovlina’s coach.
Before starting her boxing career, Sandhya, a Sikkim native, was involved in a car accident that left her paralyzed and forced her to spend three years in a bed. She was wary of boxing after her recuperation because it wasn’t yet a well-organized sport in the area. But when boxing became popularity in India in 1999, Sandhya was inspired to start boxing and advance to the national level in the 68kg division. She competed in her final game in 2008, winning a gold medal.
In 1999, boxing got a push in India and this motivated Sandhya to begin her journey in the sport and become a national level boxer in the 68kg category and in 2008, she played her last game and clinched a gold medal.
She was offered to become a coach or an official and she was nudged in the coaching direction by the current Chief Minister of Sikkim, Prem Singh Golay and after obtaining her coach’s diploma in 2010, she has been training various sportspersons and came across Lovlina in 2012.
Sandhya currently splits her time between the National camp in Delhi and Sikkim. She wants to make a name for women in sports by training them to be professional boxers like Lovlina.
